GROUP DISCUSSION
Q: A
principle of TV message design is that television is primarily a visual medium.
However, very few television commercials are designed without a vocal element
(actors or announcers). Even the many commercials that visually demonstrate
products in action use an off screen voice to provide information. Why is there
a need to use a voice in a television commercial?
A
commercial’s intent is to communicate to an audience about a product or
program. Using voices help to clarify the what, where, and why of the message. Visuals
can tell a story and intention, but a voice is required to help the viewer
completely understand what is being showcased. Without a voice, the visuals
presented on screen will not be able to communicate its message to audience
clearly. The combination of visual communication and vocal communication is the
key to providing an entertaining and interesting commercial that will catch the
viewer’s eye.
